The expressions "to pick [pronoun/noun] up" and "to pick up [noun]" have
two meanings.

1. To take a vehicle to a place to give a person a ride to another place.

I picked John up at the airport and took him to my office.

2. To become friends in a romantic sense.

I picked Sally up at the party. She has been my girl friend ever since.

Since the second meaning is mildly irregular, it is often used in the negative.

Sally is a good girl. She would not let anyone pick her up at a party.

Or in a question:

Are you trying to pick me up? I already have a girl friend.
